This song was written in loving memory of my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. They had an old house with a great big kitchen. When we visited my grandparents when I was a little girl, the grown-ups would sit around the table drinking coffee, sometimes playing cards, and talking about family and friends. I wanted to sit at the table with them, but as I was only nine, they didn't think I was old enough yet to join the adult conversation. I would hide on Grandma's steps behide the curtain and try to hear what they were saying. As the story goes, one night Grandma caught me (I was 10 by this time) and she said "well I guess you're old enough now to come sit with us. "Do you want a cup of coffee?" she said. I said "of course!" (Though it was mostly milk, it sure tasted good!) I felt like I was finally part of the "family conversations." I know my brother and sister's were jealous (I was the oldest child out of a family of five children)as they were told to "go to sleep" and "don't come down those stairs unless you want a spanking!" I was so happy to be at that table.
